Gardening – Gerberas

P1020378 Gerbera Jamesonii Gerbera

Gerbera is a genus of plants in the Asteracae (daisy family). This delightful flower is a native of tropical regions of South America, Africa and Asia.

A favourite cut flower and comes in many colours. Potted gerberas will flower for weeks if placed in a bright position. Keep the potting mix slightly moist and only water when soil is dry. Any excess water pour out of the saucer as gerberas do not like being too wet.

Ideal for your desk or windowsill as it cleans the air. Anyone would love a bunch of gerberas or a potted plant.

Some are suitable for garden beds or outdoor planters, while other varieties are grown commercially for cut flowers.

When the flowers are finished replace with a fresh new gerbera – there are dozens of colours to choose from.

Gerberas are the fifth most cut flower in the world after roses, carnation, chrysanthemum and tulips.
